INCREDIBLE and EXTREMELY RARE original WWII Don Cossacks Volunteer Sleeve Shield, a field-made example crafted from coloured wool and sewn onto field-grey backing. This pre-1944 handmade variant predates the later printed “2nd Pattern” issue. Worn by members of the XV (15th) SS Cossack Cavalry Corps, these shields were produced locally in occupied territories and display distinctive irregular stitching and rustic construction.
The Don Cossacks were among the largest groups of Russian defectors who joined German forces after Operation Barbarossa. Drawn by anti-Communist sentiment and loyalty to traditional Cossack identity, they formed elite cavalry units that served primarily on the Eastern Front. Despite their tactical value, the unit became notorious for brutal reprisals and later suffered severe fates—many were forcibly repatriated to the USSR, where they faced execution or imprisonment.
This piece shows clear period wear consistent with field use and does not glow under UV light. A rare survivor from one of the most historically complex and tragic foreign volunteer formations of the Waffen-SS.
Historical Context
The 15th SS Cossack Cavalry Corps originated from Russian Cossack defectors during the German invasion of the USSR. Initially formed under General von Pannwitz, the corps fought in Yugoslavia and on the Eastern Front, often conducting anti-partisan operations. After Germany’s surrender, thousands of its men were handed over to the Soviets during the Betrayal of the Cossacks (Lienz, 1945), an event marking one of the darkest episodes of postwar repatriations.
This insignia represents both the identity and desperation of the Cossack volunteers—symbols of loyalty to their people and tragedy in the face of shifting wartime alliances.

Not my first militaria purchase, but probably the first time I didn’t feel like I had to “decode” the listing. Straightforward, clear photos, realistic condition notes. That alone earns trust.

What I liked most was the way the history was presented. Factual and clearly written for collectors instead of glorifying anything. That matters to me.

Bought one piece initially just to test the waters. Ended up placing another order a week later. That should say enough.
