INCREDIBLE Original WWII field-made sleeve shield worn by members of the 15th Waffen-SS Latvian Volunteer Division, one of the key Baltic formations under German command. Constructed from red wool sewn onto field-grey backing, with a white cotton diagonal stripe symbolising the national colours of Latvia. This example represents the early handmade type, predating the later standardised “LATVIJA” embroidered version produced on black wool.

The field-made nature of this piece gives it a distinctive character — the wool base and rough stitching reflect wartime improvisation and limited access to formal supply chains in occupied Latvia.

Historical Context

Formed in 1943, the 15th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (1st Latvian) comprised Latvian volunteers and conscripts primarily fighting on the Eastern Front against Soviet forces. Many joined in hopes of defending Latvia from renewed Soviet occupation following the first annexation in 1940. The early, locally-produced sleeve shields like this one were crafted in occupied territories before centralised production began in Germany.

These patches served as both identification and a subtle statement of national pride, merging local identity with the structure of the Waffen-SS. Surviving handmade examples are rare and historically significant, offering a tangible link to the Baltic volunteers’ complex wartime experience.

Condition

Good condition overall with light field wear and age toning to the stripe. No postwar alterations.
