INCREDIBLE and EXTREMELY RARE WWII 29th Waffen-SS “RONA” (Russian People’s Liberation Army) field-made volunteer sleeve shield. Constructed from green wool with hand-sewn Cyrillic “POHA” lettering and a black cross emblem stitched onto a red-bordered white field. This example was uniform-removed and shows honest field wear, staining, and thread ageing typical of wartime use.

These early handmade shields were produced in occupied Russia before the introduction of the later printed “2nd pattern” types. They were worn by men of the Russian People’s Liberation Army (POHA/POA) — anti-communist volunteers and former “White Russians” under Bronislav Kaminski, who fought primarily on the Eastern Front and later participated in operations on the Western Front.

Historical Context

The RONA Brigade (Russian National Liberation Army), later designated the 29th Waffen-Grenadier-Division der SS “RONA”, was formed from anti-communist Russian volunteers aligned with the Third Reich. Initially operating in occupied Russia against Soviet partisans, the unit later fought in Poland and Germany. Known for its brutality, the division was disbanded near the war’s end, with most survivors forcibly repatriated to the USSR, where many were executed or imprisoned.

This handmade example represents an early and exceptionally scarce form of collaborationist insignia — a unique artefact from one of the most controversial foreign volunteer units of the Waffen-SS.

Condition

Good, service-used condition with field wear, light fraying, and minor staining. Displays authentic period character and thread ageing.
