Original British-produced surrender leaflet dropped over the German defenders of Cherbourg in 1944. These leaflets were distributed in large numbers by aircraft to weaken German resistance and encourage capitulation during the battle for the port city. This example includes period handwriting along the margin (“[location], August 1944”) and comes with a handwritten collector’s translation. Single central fold from wartime handling; otherwise well preserved.

Historical Context

During the June 1944 battle for Cherbourg, Allied forces used large-scale leaflet drops to undermine German morale and highlight the growing hopelessness of the situation. This leaflet challenges Hitler’s claim that only a “small clique” opposed him, instead listing senior German generals who had already been dismissed or had urged an end to the fighting. Such propaganda sought to erode loyalty in the ranks and speed the city’s surrender.

Condition

Good condition. Single vertical fold, light handling wear, and handwritten notation along the margin. Text remains sharp and fully legible.
