Original WWII German Sterbebild (death card) commemorating Unteroffizier Alex Grygiel, a machine gun company NCO who fell in combat on the Eastern Front on 27 July 1942. Born in Bremen in 1920, he served with distinction, earning the Iron Cross 2nd Class, Infantry Assault Badge, and the Ostmedaille.

The card includes his portrait in Wehrmacht uniform, along with a biblical verse and prayers in Gothic script, expressing faith and remembrance. Published by Christophorus-Verlag Herder K.G., Berlin & Freiburg, this is a highly detailed example of an early Eastern Front memorial.

Historical Context

Produced during the height of the German advance into the Soviet Union, this death card reflects both patriotic and religious devotion. Many such cards emphasised sacrifice in the fight against Bolshevism, blending personal loss with faith in eternal life.
