Original 1940 leaflet illustrated by Wolfgang Willrich and published by the Volksbund für das Deutschtum im Ausland (VDA – Association for German Cultural Relations Abroad). The artwork depicts Feldwebel Jakob, who advanced 23 km into the Maginot Line as a reconnaissance leader and was awarded the Iron Cross 1st Class (E.K.I.).

This leaflet, dated 15. Juni 1940, was part of the VDA’s wartime portrait series commemorating German front-line soldiers and acts of military valour.

Historical Context

The Volksbund für das Deutschtum im Ausland (VDA) was a nationalist organisation promoting German culture abroad during the Third Reich. Leaflets like this one illustrated soldiers’ achievements to inspire loyalty and morale on the home front, aligning with Willrich’s depictions of the German soldier.

Condition

Good overall with mild edge wear and light age toning. Print remains crisp and colours well preserved.
