Original WWII German Sterbebild (death card) commemorating Sanitäts-Gefreiter Johann Rittenschober of the Luftwaffe medical corps. Born in St. Konrad, Austria, he was a master blacksmith (Schmiedemeister) and homeowner who was killed on 17 January 1945 during heavy fighting on the Eastern Front at the age of 38.

The card features Rittenschober’s portrait in Luftwaffe uniform, a biblical verse, and mourning text. The reverse includes patriotic and Christian imagery, including a steel helmet, sword, and cross, symbolising both sacrifice and faith. Printed by Salzkammergut-Druckerei, Gmunden.

Historical Context

Death cards served as memorial tributes distributed to families and friends of fallen German soldiers. This example reflects the late-war period, when fierce fighting and loss were widespread on the Eastern Front. Rittenschober’s card combines Christian devotion with military symbolism, representing the era’s blend of faith, patriotism, and mourning.

Condition

Very good condition with light foxing and minor age toning. Clean text and image, fold intact.
