Original WWII German Sterbebild (death card) commemorating Feldwebel and Zugführer Georg Simmelbauer, who was killed on 29 October 1944 near Lenelin, northeast of Augsburg, at the age of 25. A decorated non-commissioned officer from Pattenham in the parish of Rotthalmünster, Simmelbauer was recognised for bravery with multiple awards, including the Iron Cross 2nd Class.

The card features his portrait in uniform displaying the Iron Cross ribbon and depicts a soldier’s grave on the reverse. Issued by Schönbrunner, Rotthalmünster, this memorial stands as a typical late-war tribute to the fallen of the Wehrmacht.

Historical Context

By late 1944, the German army was engaged in desperate defensive fighting across the collapsing Eastern Front. Death cards such as this served both as family memorials and local parish records of sacrifice, often distributed through churches and villages to honour fallen servicemen.

Condition

Good condition with light toning and minor wear at edges. Print and portrait remain well preserved.
