Original WWII German Sterbebild (death card) commemorating Franz Wudy, born 31 December 1914 in Neckarau, who died on 3 November 1947 during his repatriation from Soviet captivity in Schwedloosa. Wudy survived the war but succumbed to the harsh postwar conditions many German POWs faced on their return journey from the East.
The card features his portrait in Wehrmacht uniform and a prayer below appealing for divine mercy. The reverse displays a religious image of the Virgin Mary — “Queen of Angels, pray for us” — after Murillo. Printed by Schw.-Verlag Ellw., this card is a postwar variant typical of POW remembrance pieces distributed to families after the soldier’s death was confirmed.
After the war’s end, millions of German soldiers remained imprisoned in Soviet camps. Many perished years later due to exhaustion, disease, and deprivation. Wudy’s card reflects the long human cost of captivity, symbolising the final suffering of men who survived combat but never returned home.
Excellent condition with only light corner wear. Text and imagery remain crisp and well preserved.
