Original WWII German Sterbebild (death card) commemorating Gefreiter Alois Biller of a Pioneer (Engineer) unit, who fell on 7 February 1944 near Nikopol on the Eastern Front at just 21 years old. The card notes he was a farmer’s son from Giggenried and had served previously with distinction, likely within a Pioneer detachment once attached to the Afrika Korps before redeployment east.
The front bears his portrait in field uniform and a personal poem, while the reverse features an image of St. George the Dragon Slayer, symbolising bravery and Christian virtue in battle. Printed by Anton Lackerbauer, Regen.
Nikopol, located along the Dnieper River, saw heavy fighting in early 1944 as German forces attempted to hold the Dnieper line against the advancing Soviet 3rd Ukrainian Front. Pioneer troops like Biller’s unit were vital in constructing fortifications and maintaining river defences, often under intense artillery and air attack.
