Hurry up! Only 1 item is in stock!

Original WWII German Sterbebild (death card) commemorating Gefreiter Matthias Greifeneder, an infantryman who fell on 17 March 1944 near Michailowka in southern Ukraine at the age of 21. The card includes his portrait in Wehrmacht uniform and a printed poem expressing pride and sacrifice.

Religious imagery of Christ and the Virgin Mary appears on the reverse, symbolising mourning and eternal rest. Printed by Fil. Bruckmayr, St. Marienkirchen, this is a heartfelt example of a soldier’s memorial from the Eastern Front.

Historical Context

Death cards were issued to honour fallen soldiers and distributed among family and parish members. Greifeneder’s card reflects the heavy losses suffered by German infantry during the 1944 retreat from Ukraine, combining religious devotion with patriotic remembrance.

Condition

Good condition with light creases and minor age toning. Text and images remain clear.
