Original WWII German Sterbebild (death card) for Obergefreiter Josef Liegl of Loifendorf, who died on 8 August 1945 at Atrashan, Russia. Likely a prisoner of war at the time, Liegl’s death came months after Germany’s surrender, reflecting the prolonged suffering of soldiers who remained in captivity or stranded in Soviet-held territory.
The card features a clear portrait of Liegl in Wehrmacht uniform, bordered in black with a poetic epitaph honouring his sacrifice for the Fatherland. The reverse displays a traditional religious illustration of the resurrected Christ, accompanied by the verse: “Ich bin die Auferstehung und das Leben. Wer an mich glaubt, wird leben, auch wenn er gestorben ist.” (“I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me will live, even though he dies.”). Printed by G. A. Hub, Waldmünchen.
Historical Context
Atrashan (Astrakhan) was one of many Soviet-held regions where captured German soldiers were interned in the final months of WWII. Harsh transport conditions, malnutrition, and disease claimed the lives of thousands even after peace was declared. Death cards such as this served as both memorial and closure for families who received word long after the war ended.
Condition
Very good condition. Light ageing and faint corner wear, with photograph and text clean and legible.

Did a lot of comparing before buying and ended up here. Item turned up exactly as pictured, which honestly is all I ask for these days. Packaging was solid too. Would buy again.

Not my first militaria purchase, but probably the first time I didn’t feel like I had to “decode” the listing. Straightforward, clear photos, realistic condition notes. That alone earns trust.

What I liked most was the way the history was presented. Factual and clearly written for collectors instead of glorifying anything. That matters to me.

Bought one piece initially just to test the waters. Ended up placing another order a week later. That should say enough.

Everything arrived on time and matched the listing. No drama, no excuses, no surprises. That’s increasingly uncommon with online militaria.

I collect mainly German pieces and I was pleasantly surprised by how accurate the description was. Nothing overstated, nothing hidden. Kind of rare now. Very happy with the purchase.
