Hurry up! Only 1 item is in stock!

Original WWII German Sterbebild (death card) commemorating Schütze Hans Berr, an infantryman killed in action on 31 August 1942 on the Eastern Front at only 18 years of age. A native of Burglengenfeld and son of a painter, Berr was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class for bravery.

The card shows his portrait in uniform with printed devotional text below, bordered in black for mourning. The reverse features a Gothic-script prayer in white against a black background — a stylistically striking late-1942 format. Printed by Buchdruckerei Gg. Nuhstein, Burglengenfeld.

Historical Context

By mid-1942, German forces were engaged in fierce fighting across southern Russia during Operation Blue — the drive toward Stalingrad and the Caucasus. Thousands of young soldiers like Berr fell during these offensives, many scarcely out of school. Death cards such as this were distributed by families and local parishes to commemorate their sacrifice.

Condition

Good overall with light creasing and minor edge wear. Print and image remain sharp.
