Original WWII German Sterbebild (death card) for Unteroffizier Georg Hallermeier, a painter from Chammünster who was killed in action on 22 August 1944 in Rouen, France, during the closing stages of the Normandy Campaign. Born on 31 October 1909, Hallermeier was 34 years old at the time of his death.

The card includes his Wehrmacht portrait in uniform and a heartfelt verse from his wife expressing grief and hope for reunion. The reverse side features a traditional illustration of a soldier’s grave marked by a cross and helmet, surrounded by forest, symbolising the fallen on foreign soil. Printed by J. Wein, Cham.

Historical Context

The death occurred during the German retreat through northern France following the Allied breakout from Normandy. The area around Rouen was a site of heavy fighting as German forces attempted to escape encirclement during the Falaise Pocket operations. Cards like this served as both religious memorials and family tributes to soldiers who fell in defence of occupied Europe.

Condition

Excellent condition with light toning and minimal wear. Print, portrait, and reverse artwork are crisp and well preserved.
