Original Wehrmacht aluminium ID disc (Erkennungsmarke) belonging to the Staff Company (Stab) of Divisions-Füsilier-Bataillon 23, soldier number 80. These reconnaissance and infantry hybrid units served as the eyes and ears of the division, performing scouting, defensive screening, and rapid-response duties.

Historical Context

The Divisional Fusilier Battalions (D.F.B.) were created from late 1943 onwards to replace or supplement the Aufklärungs-Abteilungen (Reconnaissance Battalions). They were elite infantry units tasked with reconnaissance, holding advanced positions, and engaging in flexible combat roles. The 23rd Infantry Division, formed in 1939, fought in Poland, France, and later on the Eastern Front — notably participating in operations in the Baltic region and the defence of East Prussia. The men of its Füsilier-Bataillon 23 would have experienced both reconnaissance and frontline combat throughout the division’s campaigns.

Condition

Excellent overall condition with light surface wear and clear, sharp stamping. No corrosion or major damage.
