Original German Army M34 Tornister named to Unteroffizier Wegener of Pioneer Battalion 562, with field post number 10993 marked on the flap. This example is a transitional 1939 model produced by H. Larsen, Berlin, showing a mix of pre-war and wartime construction traits.

The pack is constructed from khaki canvas and leather, featuring all standard webbing and buckles. One shoulder strap is an early WWI-dated (1915) replacement, while the other remains the factory 1939 strap. A central belt hook, a modification carried into the later M41 variant, is fitted. All leather remains soft and pliable, and nearly all hardware is present—only one lower buckle is missing.

Historical Context

The M34 Tornister was the standard German field pack design issued to Wehrmacht soldiers prior to and during the early years of the Second World War. Used to carry personal and field equipment, these packs combined leather and canvas for durability. Units such as Pioneer Battalion 562, based in East Prussia, were essential engineering units responsible for bridge building, demolitions, and fortifications—critical to both offensive and defensive operations on the Eastern Front. Named examples like this provide a tangible connection to an individual soldier and unit history, making them highly sought after by collectors.

Condition

Excellent used condition for its age. Canvas and stitching are firm, leather retains suppleness, and all markings remain legible. Minor field wear consistent with service use.
