Original WWII Idel-Ural Legion sleeve shield, 2nd pattern printed example on cotton. Worn by volunteers of the Idel-Ural Legion, a unit formed from Volga Tatar and Bashkir recruits serving within the German Army on the Eastern Front. The design features a crossed sword and arrow on a blue-over-green field, symbolising the legion’s homeland between the Volga River and Ural Mountains.
Produced in the Reich circa 1943–44, this simplified printed pattern replaced the earlier embroidered version for ease of mass manufacture. The print remains clear and vibrant, with only minor age toning and light handling marks from long-term storage.
The Idel-Ural Legion was created in 1942 as part of Germany’s Ostlegionen, recruiting Turkic and Muslim peoples from the Soviet Union. These volunteers were motivated by anti-Soviet sentiment and a desire for national autonomy. The shield’s design proudly reflected this ethnic identity while signifying service under the Wehrmacht.
Excellent unissued condition. The fabric is strong and supple with crisp printed detail. Minor edge fraying and faint staining are present but do not detract from appearance.
