Original First World War Iron Cross Second Class (Eisernes Kreuz 2. Klasse), award issue 1914–1918, maker marked “SW” for S. Wagner, Berlin. This example is complete with its original black and white suspension ribbon and clearly stamped ring mark.
The Iron Cross was Prussia’s (and later Imperial Germany’s) best-known award for bravery and merit in combat. Re-instituted at the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, the Second Class was typically awarded to soldiers for acts of courage under fire, leadership in the field, or distinguished service at the front. The cross was worn suspended from the black and white ribbon, either on parade or mounted in ribbon bars after award.
Good, untouched condition — light age patina to the silver frame and minor surface wear to the painted iron core. Ribbon shows fraying, stitch holes and edge wear consistent with actual wear and later storage. Maker mark “SW” remains legible on the ring. A desirable marked example.
