Original First World War Iron Cross Second Class (Eisernes Kreuz 2. Klasse), maker marked “SW” for S. Wagner, Berlin. This example features its original black and white suspension ribbon and retains strong enamel-style paint finish with light age patina to the silver frame.

Historical Context

The Iron Cross was one of Imperial Germany’s most recognised awards, symbolising valour and distinguished service in battle. Re-instituted by Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1914, the Second Class was awarded to soldiers for acts of bravery or meritorious conduct in the field. The cross’s design traces back to 1813, introduced by King Frederick William III of Prussia during the Napoleonic Wars, and was revived for subsequent German conflicts.

Condition

Very good overall condition — light silver toning to frame and mild surface patina consistent with age. Core retains strong black finish, and the “SW” maker mark remains sharp and legible. Ribbon shows minor handling wear only. A fine, well-preserved maker-marked example.
