Original First World War Iron Cross Second Class (Eisernes Kreuz 2. Klasse), produced by H.J. Wilm of Berlin and marked “WILM” on the suspension ring. This example remains complete with its period black and white Prussian-style ribbon and features a well-preserved silver frame with an iron core.

Historical Context

Instituted by Kaiser Wilhelm II on 5 August 1914, the Iron Cross Second Class was awarded for acts of bravery and distinguished service during the First World War. The “WILM” maker mark identifies H.J. Wilm, a prestigious Berlin jeweller and silversmith who produced high-quality decorations and awards during the Imperial and early Weimar periods. The Iron Cross was worn suspended from the ribbon on the tunic and later often mounted on medal bars.

Condition

Good overall condition — light patina to the silver frame and mild toning from age. The black paint on the iron core remains well-preserved with minor surface wear. The “WILM” mark is crisp and legible. Ribbon shows minor fraying at edges but remains strong and original. A highly sought-after maker-marked example.
