Original 1940 leaflet illustrated by Wolfgang Willrich, published by the Volksbund für das Deutschtum im Ausland (VDA – Association for German Cultural Relations Abroad). The artwork portrays Kapitänleutnant Günther Prien Schuhart, commander of a U-boat credited with sinking the British aircraft carrier HMS Courageous.

The text below the portrait reads: “Einer der Männer, auf die alle Deutschen in der Welt in gleicher Weise stolz sind...” — “One of the men of whom all Germans in the world are equally proud.” This leaflet, dated 10. Januar 1940, was part of the VDA’s portrait series honouring decorated service members.

Historical Context

Willrich’s art series depicted heroes from all military branches, reinforcing the image of strength and loyalty.
