INCREDIBLE Rare embroidered officer’s example of the 1813 Kulm Cross (Iron Cross), measuring approximately 42mm. This finely constructed early 19th-century piece features black cloth with intricate silver bullion wirework, representative of privately acquired officer-quality insignia from the Napoleonic Wars period.

Historical Context

The Kulm Cross is associated with the 1813 campaign against Napoleonic France, particularly following the Battle of Kulm (29–30 August 1813). The Iron Cross was originally instituted by King Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia during the Wars of Liberation.

Officer-grade examples were often privately commissioned and embroidered rather than struck in iron, using silver bullion wire over a dark cloth base. These early pieces are significantly scarcer than later 1914 and 1939 reissues, and surviving embroidered examples represent an important transitional form in Prussian military decoration history.

Condition

Excellent overall condition for an embroidered Napoleonic-era insignia. Silver bullion wire remains intact with strong structural integrity and minimal loss. Black cloth base shows light age-related wear consistent with period construction. Reverse retains original felt backing with expected ageing and patina. A well-preserved and highly presentable example.
