Original Luxembourg 20 Francs banknote, dated 1943, issued under German occupation during the Second World War. The note features Grand Duchess Charlotte on the obverse, with the overprinted German text “Zwanzig Franken” reflecting the occupiers’ control over the region’s currency.

The reverse depicts an agricultural scene with a male farmer resting beside harvested crops, symbolising national productivity and stability amid wartime conditions.

Historical Context

After the German occupation of Luxembourg in 1940, local banknotes were overprinted with German text and partially controlled by the Reichskreditkassen. These modified issues circulated between 1941 and 1944, marking a period when the country’s sovereignty and currency were aligned with the Reich’s financial system. Following liberation in 1944, Luxembourg reissued non-overprinted notes.

Condition

Circulated with mild creasing and centre fold. No tears, repairs, or writing. Strong details and intact edges.
