Original 1941 leaflet illustrated by Wolfgang Willrich, issued by the Volksbund für das Deutschtum im Ausland (VDA – Association for German Cultural Relations Abroad). The portrait depicts Major Helmut Wick, Luftwaffe fighter ace and wing commander (Jagdgeschwaderkommodore), who became one of Germany’s most decorated airmen before his death in 1940.

The leaflet, titled “Major Wick – Kommodore eines Jagdgeschwaders”, was published as part of the VDA’s wartime portrait series honouring decorated officers.

Historical Context

The Volksbund für das Deutschtum im Ausland (VDA) operated as a nationalist organisation promoting German culture abroad and producing leaflets during WWII. Its Willrich portrait series was used to glorify military heroes. Major Helmut Wick, the subject of this piece, was celebrated as a Luftwaffe icon during the early war years, particularly for his combat record in the Battle of Britain.
