Original 1940 leaflet illustrated by Wolfgang Willrich, published by the Volksbund für das Deutschtum im Ausland (VDA – Association for German Cultural Relations Abroad). The portrait shows Oberleutnant Schumacher, a Luftwaffe squadron commander whose pilots were credited with downing 36 British bombers in a single air battle.

This example, titled “Oberleutnant Schumacher – Kommodore eines Jagdgeschwaders …”, is part of the VDA’s wartime portrait series celebrating German airmen and their victories.

Historical Context

The Volksbund für das Deutschtum im Ausland (VDA) was a state-aligned cultural organisation that produced patriotic material during WWII. Willrich’s portrait series portrayed idealised German soldiers and aviators to promote national pride and unity, especially among youth groups.

Condition

Good overall with mild edge wear and slight toning consistent with age. Colours remain bright and well preserved.
