Original WWII German Ostvolk Medal First Class Without Swords, silver grade. Constructed from zinc with a silver wash finish, this late-war award was designed to recognise non-German volunteers and collaborators from Eastern territories who supported German military operations.

This piece remains complete with its factory-assembled hardware, featuring the correct hinged pin, solid catch, and wire hinge block on the reverse. It exhibits the classic 20-pointed radiating starburst design with an embossed central floral motif, typical of the late-war Ostvolk issues.

Historical Context

Instituted in 1942, the Ostvolk Medal (Medaille für Verdienste im Osten) was awarded to members of Eastern volunteer units and civilians serving under German command in the occupied territories. The First Class version, worn on the left breast pocket, represented a higher grade of recognition for service. Versions without swords denoted non-combat contributions, while those with swords were for acts of bravery or military service.

By 1944–45, due to material shortages, most were produced in zinc, leading to the subdued silver tone seen today.

Condition

Excellent condition for a zinc-based late-war award. Retains strong detail and full structural integrity. Minor age patina to the silver finish, with complete and functional pin assembly.
