Original first edition copy of “The Alternative” (1947) by Sir Oswald Mosley, founder of the British Union of Fascists. Printed by Mosley Publications, Ramsbury, Wiltshire, this volume presents Mosley’s post-war political vision, outlining his proposed “European alternative” to both communism and capitalism.

This example retains its original black dust jacket with bold red lettering, showing moderate wear and edge creasing consistent with age. An important historical work that captures Mosley’s ideological re-emergence after WWII and his attempts to reposition himself within post-war British politics.

Historical Context

Following his release from wartime internment under Defence Regulation 18B, Mosley sought to rehabilitate his political standing. The Alternative was published in 1947 and set out his argument for a united, independent Europe — a “Third Position” rejecting both American capitalism and Soviet communism.

Though largely dismissed by the British public, the work remains a key text in understanding the ideological evolution of Mosley and the far-right movements of post-war Europe. Surviving first edition examples are increasingly scarce, particularly those with intact dust jackets.

Condition

Good condition with light foxing and moderate wear to the dust jacket, including minor chipping to edges. Binding remains firm and pages clean.
