Original VAD (Voluntary Labour Service) member’s badge, manufactured by Assmann & Söhne, Lüdenscheid. The design features a spade flanked by stylised wheat sheaves, symbolising agricultural labour and national service, representing the female auxiliary branch of the Reich Labour Service (RAD). Marked “A” and “GES. GESCH.” on the reverse, indicating official Assmann production.

Historical Context

The VAD (Voluntary Workers Service) functioned as part of the Reichsarbeitsdienst (RAD) structure, encouraging women to participate in agricultural and domestic labour for national development. Assmann’s production quality and hallmarking make this an excellent and authentic early example of the organisation’s insignia, symbolising pre-war mobilisation of the German workforce.

Condition

Good condition with age wear and light patina. Some verdigris visible around the reverse pin mount, typical of bronze composition. Detail remains well-defined.
