Original WWII Waffen-SS Croatian Volunteer Sleeve Shield, featuring the red-and-white chequered Croatian national emblem embroidered on black wool backing. Worn by members of the 13th Waffen Mountain Division of the SS “Handschar” (1st Croatian) and related Croatian volunteer units serving under the Waffen-SS during the Second World War.
This unissued and well-preserved example retains bright colours and detailed stitching, typical of wartime German manufacture. These shields identified a soldier’s national origin within the Waffen-SS and are now prized as genuine relics of Axis foreign volunteer formations.
Croatian volunteers served primarily in the 13th Waffen Mountain Division “Handschar”, active in the Balkans from 1943 to 1945. Sleeve shields like this one were worn on the upper arm to signify nationality within the Waffen-SS. Surviving examples are scarce and sought after for their distinctive design and historical value.
