Original WWII Waffen-SS Latvian Volunteer Sleeve Shield, featuring the national colours of Latvia — a diagonal white stripe across a deep red field, with “LATVIJA” embroidered above. This authentic wartime example was produced for Latvian volunteers serving within the Waffen-SS, most notably in the 15th and 19th Waffen Grenadier Divisions.

This piece remains unissued and in very good condition, retaining strong colour and tight embroidery. A small amount of adhesive residue on the reverse indicates prior mounting in a collector’s album — a common preservation method among early postwar collections.

Historical Context

Latvian volunteers formed two divisions within the Waffen-SS — the 15th and 19th Waffen Grenadier Divisions — primarily tasked with anti-Soviet operations on the Eastern Front. Many joined in hopes of defending Latvia from Soviet reoccupation. The shield, worn on the left upper sleeve, symbolised national identity under the German command structure. Surviving embroidered versions such as this are prized for their craftsmanship and scarcity compared to later printed types.

Condition

Excellent unissued condition with light handling wear and minor glue marks on the reverse.
