Original First World War Austrian veteran’s ribbon bar representing three decorations awarded for service during the 1914–1918 Great War. This example features period-mounted ribbons with crossed swords device, indicative of combatant service, and remains in its original configuration with full backing plate and pin assembly.

Historical Context

During and after the First World War, Austro-Hungarian veterans commonly wore ribbon bars to denote entitlement to multiple decorations without displaying full medals. The red and white striped ribbon represents the Austrian War Medal (Kriegsmedaille), while the black-white-red ribbon with crossed swords denotes wartime service and combat distinction under the Austro-Hungarian awards system.

Ribbon bars such as this were worn on military tunics and later veteran uniforms, serving as a compact visual summary of an individual’s wartime record within the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Condition

The ribbons show age-related wear, minor fraying at the edges, and light fading consistent with period use. The metal backing plate and pin assembly remain intact and functional, with surface wear and light oxidation visible. Overall, a well-preserved original example in honest used condition.
