Original World War I Austrian veteran ribbon bar representing two awards from the 1914–1918 Great War period. Featuring the distinctive red and white striped ribbon with crossed swords device denoting combatant service, this interwar example reflects veteran recognition awarded in the years following the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

A compact and historically meaningful piece ideal for WW1 Austro-Hungarian or interwar European collections.

Historical Context

Following the end of the First World War and the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Austria instituted commemorative decorations to recognise wartime service. One of the most commonly awarded was the Austrian War Medal 1914–1918 (Kriegsmedaille), introduced in 1932.

The red-and-white ribbon pattern is consistent with Austrian Great War commemorative awards. The miniature crossed swords device signifies frontline combatant service.

Ribbon bars such as this were worn on civilian or military attire by veterans during the interwar period, particularly at commemorative events and public functions. Two-place ribbon bars indicate entitlement to multiple decorations.

Condition

Good overall veteran-worn condition.

  • Ribbon shows light fraying and period wear

  • Minor staining consistent with age

  • Crossed swords device intact with remaining gilt finish

  • Reverse pin assembly complete and functional

  • Stitching partially loose at centre seam but structurally stable

An honest, untouched example with natural age characteristics.
