Original First World War Imperial German Iron Cross 2nd Class manufactured by Johann Wagner & Sohn of Berlin and correctly ring-marked “IW.” This classic three-piece construction example features a magnetic iron core with silver frame and represents one of the most recognisable and historically significant combat decorations of the Imperial German Army. A solid, maker-marked example suitable for both new and advanced collectors.

Historical Context

The Iron Cross 2nd Class was reauthorised by Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1914 at the outbreak of the First World War and awarded to soldiers of all ranks for bravery and distinguished service in combat. The obverse displays the crowned “W” for Wilhelm II above the date “1914,” while the reverse carries the crowned “FW” and “1813,” referencing the decoration’s original institution during the Napoleonic Wars.

Johann Wagner & Sohn of Berlin was among the recognised wartime manufacturers, and the “IW” ring mark confirms period production. Maker-marked examples are particularly desirable as they allow for clear attribution to an official Imperial supplier.

Condition

Very good overall condition with natural age patina to the silver frame. The iron core shows typical oxidation consistent with wartime manufacture, with clear detail to the crown and date. The suspension ring remains intact and correctly stamped “IW,” with no evidence of modern alteration or repair.
