Original Imperial German Militärpaß issued to Friedrich Diekmann, a five-year volunteer (Fünfjährig-Freiwilliger) who entered service on 1 October 1899 with Infanterie-Regiment Graf Bülow von Dennewitz (6. Westfälisches) Nr. 55. The booklet documents his service, training, postings, and later annotations, with remarks relating to the First World War period noting no active wartime service due to health reasons.

Historical Context

Five-year volunteers were a distinct class within the Imperial German Army, typically better-educated men who committed to extended service and often formed a pool of trained reservists. Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 55 was a Prussian line regiment with strong Westphalian ties, active during the pre-war professional army period that shaped German military doctrine before 1914.

Condition

Period-used condition throughout. Covers show heavy wear, edge losses, and softening consistent with long service use. Interior pages remain largely intact, with legible entries, stamps, and signatures. Typical age toning and binding wear present.
