An original World War II German Wehrmacht wooden ammunition crate for the Ei-Handgranate 39 (Egg Grenade). Retaining its original stencilled lid markings and 1943-dated maker stamp, this is a highly displayable and increasingly scarce piece of German field ordnance packaging.

Historical Context

The Ei-Handgranate 39 was a compact German fragmentation grenade widely used throughout the war, particularly from 1939 onward. Designed for ease of carrying and rapid deployment, it became a common issue item for infantry units.

Transport crates such as this example were used to store and distribute 30 grenades along with corresponding fuzes (Brennzünder) and detonator capsules. Clearly stencilled lids identified contents for logistical handling at depots and front-line supply points. Boxes dated 1943 represent mid-war production, a period of intensified ammunition output for all fronts.

Condition

The box remains in very good condition with strong, clearly legible white stencilling to the lid reading “30 Eihandgr. 39 / 30 Brennzünder für Eihandgr. 39 / 30 Spr. Kapseln.” The original dark field-grey paint shows honest handling wear and surface scuffing consistent with age.

The wooden construction is solid, with intact dovetail joints and original rope carry handle present. Interior labels remain partially visible beneath the lid. Maker marking and 1943 date are present to the base. Overall, a well-preserved and attractive display example.
