An original World War II German Wehrmacht wooden ammunition crate for the Grosse Gewehr Granate (large rifle grenade). Clearly stencilled “Heeres-Munition” with “Gesamtgew. 13,5 kg” and dated 1944, this is a strong late-war example retaining its original markings and hardware.

Historical Context

The Grosse Gewehr Granate was a rifle-launched grenade fired from the Karabiner 98k using a grenade-launching attachment, providing infantry units with short-range anti-personnel and anti-armour capability.

Wooden transport crates such as this were used to store and distribute grenades to frontline units. By 1944, German production reflected wartime pressures, yet packaging remained durable and functional. The “Heeres-Munition” marking confirms Army issue, while the weight marking denotes total loaded weight when full. Late-war dated crates are particularly desirable due to their association with the final phase of the conflict.

Condition

The crate remains in very good condition with solid construction and tight dovetail joints. The original black stencilling is clearly visible across multiple panels. The metal latch and hinges are intact and secure, showing honest age-related oxidation. The original rope carry handle remains present and firmly attached. Surface wear and marks are consistent with storage and transport use. Overall, a well-preserved and display-worthy example.
